So, you’ve decided you want to make a change (well done!), but you’re feeling a little lost and don’t know where to start. Maybe you feel a little overwhelmed with the idea of changing your whole diet and you’re not sure what kind of exercise you need to do, to start seeing results.
Here are Zest24’s top tips on where to start with your health and fitness journey:
-Start with breakfast. Changing your entire diet can be far to stressful and difficult is you’re just starting out. We recommend starting with 1-2 weeks of just making your breakfast healthier. If you normally go for a high sugar cereal, why not try swapping it for oatmeal and berries? Perhaps you love a fry- up? Try scrambled eggs with mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach and a slice or 2 of smoked salmon instead? Once you feel like you’ve conquered a healthy breakfast, you can move onto lunch, then dinner. Taking small steps is much more likely to keep you on track in the long run than trying to cut out too many foods in one go.
-How big is your plate of food?
Once you’ve got the hang of a more healthy diet, take a look at your portion sizes. Do you eat until you feel ready to burst? Are you still really hungry after a meal? You may need to change how much you’re eating. We suggest having your food in a quiet place, away from distractions such as laptops and tvs which can result in you overeating. Pay attention to your body’s natural signals and what they are trying to tell you. If you’re starting to feel full, stop. You can always save leftovers for the next day.
-Are you getting enough water?
Water is key to allowing your body to function at its best, keeping you fuller, more energised and generally just healthier. You’re likely not drinking enough, so start carrying a water bottle with you and make a conscious effort to drink up!
There are so many types that it can be hard to know which is right for you. If you’re just starting out and usually find it hard to stick to a routine, just find something you enjoy. If you don’t like it, you’re much more likely to give up. It’s always better if you can persuade a friend to join you, you’ll enjoy it even more and they’ll hold you accountable. If you are overweight and aren’t working with a PT, then I’d suggest starting with a low impact exercise such as cycling, swimming or walking to avoid too much impact on your joints and to prevent injury. Once you’re a little fitter you can start being more adventurous with the exercise you do.
-Take it one day at a time.
See it as a journey, rather than a quick fix. Weight-loss takes time and it’s important to enjoy the process. Cook healthy food but make sure it tastes great, otherwise you’ll give up. Move your body in fun ways and get out in the fresh air as much as possible. You’ll feel amazing for it!
